Print-through problems from infusion: Solved

Montreal, Canada, June 19, 2007 - Kaizen Technologies and Sogel Inc. are proud to announce that they have developed a solution called PrintShield™ that solves the print-through and surface profiling problem encountered particularly in closed molding processes like Vacuum Infusion Processing and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM).

A complex problem

The print-through problem is caused by the complex interaction between the gel-coat, the reinforcement and the resin used in the manufacturing of composite parts. While print-through does not affect the performance of the part; it detracts from its aesthetic appearance.

An easy solution

PrintShield™ is a protective layer that is easily applied over the gel-coat before the reinforcement is placed. PrintShield™ does not require any special equipment as it can be applied with a standard gel-coater or with a brush. Moreover, it eliminates the need for the laborious application of a skin coat currently used to reduce print-through. Ultimately, Printshield™ decreases the manufacturing time of large parts.

PrintShield™ is a low shrink and non brittle material with an overlap time of more than 2 weeks, so it’s possible to use it for very large structures without any adhesion problems.

All of the PrintShield™ benefits are proposed in 4 different grades:

- Marine Vinylester for the best osmotic resistance

- Marine Polyester for general purpose marine parts

- Standard Polyester for transportation or industrial parts

- Tooling Polyester for “A class” finish molds (without orange peel)

Printshield™ has an impressive track record: over the past four years, over 200 000 marine parts have been produced using PrintShield™.
